Empty states explain a product better than the homepage
On the homepage a company talks about itself. In an empty state it has to say what actually happens here.

An empty screen leaves no room for generalities: you must name what will appear in this list, where it comes from and what to do first.
A side effect: once the empty state is written honestly, half the homepage usually turns out to describe an intention rather than a product.
