QUESTION #024 Open

Why do companies describe themselves in words nobody says out loud?

"Complex solutions", "synergy", "innovative approach". In email the same people speak normally.

Why the question came up

The gap between a manager's email and the website text of the same company is sometimes wider than between two different companies.

This is not about literacy. It is about who the text is actually addressed to.

What is already known

  • This language is almost always approved internally rather than tested on a reader.
  • The more approvers, the smoother and emptier the text becomes.

What is not known yet

  • What happens to trust if such text is replaced with plain speech.
  • Whether there are industries where vagueness genuinely protects.

Current hypothesis

Hypothesis

Vague language is not a style but a way to spread responsibility so that no one in particular carries it.
